here to warn them, and everythingâs gone all right. But I twisted my ankle, the one that was so swollen when I fell that time, and now Iâm lame.â
âYouâre amazing, Red Wolf, you really are,â says Pin, âbut youâre a swine all the same to leave me when youâd given me your word of honour.â
âHonour,â he says, âis due to the Cause first.â
Meanwhile they have reached Drittoâs camp. Red Wolf looks all the men up and down and replies coldly to their greetings.
âYouâve got into fine company,â says he.
âWhy?â asks Pin, a little bitterly; he has grown fond of these people already and does not want Red Wolf to come and take him away again.
Red Wolf whispers in his ear. âDonât tell anyone; but this is what Iâve heard. They send the duds to Drittoâs detachment, the cast-offs from the brigade. They may keep you here, because youâre a child. But if you like I can try and get you moved.â
Pin does not like the idea of being kept here because heâs a child; but the men he knows are not duds.
âTell me, Red Wolf, is Cousin a dud?â
âCousin is a man who has to be left on his own. He always goes round alone and is a good man and has guts.â
Pin would like to ask Red Wolf lots of other questions: âWhat about Mancino? Is it true heâs a Trotskyist?â
Perhaps, thinks Pin, heâll explain what that means.
âHeâs a Trotskyist, heâs an extremist, the commissar of the brigade told me so. You donât agree with him, do you?â
âNo, no,â replies Pin. Who knows? Perhaps Trotskyist means something degrading.
âComrade Red Wolf,â exclaims Mancino, coming up with his hawk on his shoulder. âWeâll make you Commissar of the Soviet of the Old Town!â
Red Wolf does not even look him in the face. âLeft-wing Communism, an infantile disorder,â he says to Pin.
